Mapouka is the latest dance craze and musical style out of Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa. Originally performed by the women of the high society on the southwest region of the country.

Mapouka was introduced on the popular club scene in the late 90s by a new generation of young women who turned it into an erotic dance style.

Though banned by the government Mapouka continues to be extremely popular outside its country of origin. The not-so erotic style is being performed by both many male and female groups in Cote d’Ivoire.

This is well put I can't agree with you more. Just to add a little more to what you have already said.

Mapouka, also known under the name of Macouka, is a traditional dance from the south-east of the Ivory Coast in the area of Dabou, sometimes carried out during religious ceremonies.

This dance has daring choreography that can be very sexually suggestive. The dances mostly involve women shaking their buttocks sideways vigorously, facing away from their audience. In the years 1980, artists of the Ivory Coast tried without much success to popularize it. One of the most well known groups is Tueuses de Mapouka.

In 1998, the government of the Ivory Coast decided to prohibit its performance in public. It is, paradoxically, following this prohibition that the dance now enjoys a very fast-growing global following, especially in the sub-Saharan countries and western nations with large Francophone communities. Mapouka is not a recent invention, technique or choreography. It has existed for centuries it has been used as a practical means of deciding mates for the young men and women of the community. Marriages built on such choices lasted the entire lives of the parties and the couples never had any need for divorce.

With the advance of new communication systems like internet i.e. www.angelstrade.com, Mapouka has spread to the worlds beyond West Africa and it has become a cherished gift to the world (the youth). Mapouka has become a world phenomenon. Since the introduction of Makossa (Soukous), no other dance has thrilled the world like Mapouka. You will see it in music videos, on TV, on the streets, in the nightclubs, and on the beaches at competitions almost anywhere.

Mapouka is in no way close to the activities of raunchy girls and dance steps seen in some American and European home videos and strip clubs, yet many Africans are shy to identify with such an exciting and invigorating African Dance. Please don't allow yourselves to be brainwashed or deceived? Please watch your perceptions and your beliefs. Have you become too westernized or too far away drawn from the appreciation of your culture, the African culture?

Perhaps, the intention of the dance is to positively mesmerize the audience with those rare tricks that only an African Ndombolo can do. At the end, everyone is happy and warm. As to how well this dance can help brothers decide on a potential mate, ask those who now enjoy relationships started by decisions based on Mapoukaristic impressions and satisfaction.

We love Mapouka! We are proud of it! Come join us and have fun, the African way!
