From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Soukous (also known as lingala or congo, and previously as African rumba) is a musical genre that originated in the two neighbouring countries of Congo during the 1930s and early 1940s, and which has gained popularity throughout Africa.

"Soukous" (derived from the French word secouer, to shake) was originally the name of a dance popular in the Congos in the late 1960s, and danced to an African version of rumba. Although the genre was initially known as rumba (sometimes termed specifically as African rumba), the term Soukous has come to refer to African rumba and its subsequent developments.

Soukous is called congo music in West Africa, and lingala in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania - referring to the Lingala language of the region from where it originated. In the 1980s and early 1990s, a fast paced style of soukous known as kwassa kwassa – named after a popular dance, was popular. A style called ndombolo, also named after a dance, is currently popular.

"Soukous" is the name for a specific and rather passe style of Congolese music that evolved in Europe in the early 80s. Many people call all Congolese or Lingala music "soukous", but that is incorrect.

'Soukous' i believe is a term that originated from Europe. It is true that Congolese music is referred to in different names based on which region you come from in africa as mentioned above, people from East africa call it Lingala music,Zimbabweans call it Kwassa Kwassa,Zambians call it Ndombolo etc but they all mean one thing. There is just something about Congolese music that makes it special,it is probably the most widely listened to music apart from R&B and Rap,i bet everywhere you go in the world you're likely to find someone with a cd or cassette of congolese music. When i left africa years back,i made sure a carried my Ndombolo cassette tapes.I still find them valuable as some of them cannot be found on cd.
