Quote
Known by the masses for his collaboration with the Senegalese band Africando in 1993, Pedro Gnonnas entertained many western-african celebrations in the 70’s and even today.
Born in Benin in 1943, young Gnonnas, trumpet and sax player was fascinated by latin music. Wether he was with his Panchos, the Poly Rythmo Orchestra or his Dadjes, he always knew how to mix local influences such as “Agbaja” with musical styles from the countries around (Nigeria, Ghana or Congo with) and cuban music.
Entertainer and band leader, Pedro Gnonnas settled his style beyond the African borders not without difficulty. Benin being in that time less recognized for its musical scene in front of monsters of the Congolese rhumba and Nigeria’s afrobeat.
Respected for his musician skills, he was above all a real entertainer able to sing & dance with his astonishing sense of fashion. A kind of african James Brown a little bit more crooner as a matter of fact.
