Hey.. I had some nice virus on my computer.. had to empty the whole thing... so sorry admin for me not doing my dancehall homework yet  Wink.

Anywho... just thought it would be nice to add the genres Hip Life and High Life, music from Ghana.

Highlife is a musical genre that originated in Ghana and spread to Sierra Leone and Nigeria in the 1920s and other West African countries. It is very popular in Liberia and all of English-speaking West Africa, although little has been produced in other countries due to economic challenges brought on by war and instability. "Joromi" is a sub-genre.
Highlife is characterized by jazzy horns and multiple guitars which lead the band. Recently, it has acquired an uptempo, synth-driven sound (cf. Daddy Lumba).

Hiplife music is an innovative Ghanaian fusion of highlife and hip hop. It can also be compared to a mix of reggaeton, dancehall, reggae and Ghanaian highlife music. Recorded in Ghanaian languages (Ga, Twi etc...), hiplife is rapidly gaining popularity through out West Africa and abroad, especially in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Germany.
The most popular Hiplife musicians include Tic Tac, the three person Vision in Progress (VIP) and Batman Samini, who won a MOBO award for his contribution to hipLife in 2006. Since the rise of these popular musicians, hiplife has grown in popularity abroad. It must be noted that hipLife can cover a broad range of musical styled fused together. Artist such as Samini combines the reggae/dancehall scat and patois-tinged sounds of Jamaica with Akan-language lyrics over reggae rhythms fused with Ghanaian melodies. His music is branded by the general populace as hipLife.
Then there are artists such as K.K. Fosu who do not rap or 'djay' per se; but sing with a heavy R&B influence. Verses; bridges and choruses may be in Twi, but the structure and the rhythm fusion is suspiciously based on American R&B.
Famous hiplife artist include Reggie Rockstone, Obrafour, Obour, Tinny, Tic Tac, Mzbel, VIP, Buk Bak, KK Fosu, Batman Samini, Okomfour Kwadee, Lord Kenya, Castro (D'Destroyer)

I've listened to some music from the above named artists, like VIP, Castro, Obrafour and KK Fosu and I love most of it for its nice beats and the overall feeling in the songs. So nice   Smoke.
Right now I am amazed by Ofori Amponsah and I am obsessin with this track, just found the video, yay Wink

Nice post Stephanie -- I will create a sub-forum for Highlife.

Hip Life is just an off-shoot of Highlife -- so they can be discussed together.

Can't imagine I missed it.

By the way, aren't I/we supposed to post the videos in the What is High Life section? And not the link you posted? I'm confused...  Huh

You can do both.

We just happen to have two implementations -- here on the forum + another here: http://www.africanmusicforum.com/video/phpdir/
