Very nice. Glad you posted it!

Tabu Ley is a durable 'Master of Rumba,' and still dresses very sharply! Some of the current crop dress like thugs Smiley

I Wonder where he is. Last time I heard of him, he was in California.

P/S -- I featured the video here: http://www.africanmusicforum.com/main/Video-Index.shtml

The last time he was in the headlines was probably when he was appointed Deputy Governor of Kinshasa,i don't know if he still holds that office but i enjoy watching a dvd from him entitled 'The very best of Seigneur Ley ROCHEREAU' very nicely done,it was a special 65th anniversary release.

Could't find the Title in Amazon. I will look for it elsewhere.

I am sure David already has it.

If you are into the old stuff -- This is a good collectors item:

I am into old stuff like this,it makes me learn just how much the current generation is inspired by the older folks like Ley when i hear lyrics and arrangement of songs by some of our current greats.

Yeah,King Kester Emeneya looks like he's one top fan of Michael Jackson,if you look at his older Lp's and some of his recent cd's you can see it from his dressing and his dancing,he loves that dance by Michael Jackson,is it moonwalker or something they call it. Grin

It is an excellent collection. You guys are in the Uk aren't you? It's a Stern's release. You should be able to get it easily. If you are in USA, Panafrican Allstars carries it.
Tabu Ley was my introduction to Congolese music and he will always be "my hero" because of that. I remember hearing a song from the (then) new LP with the songs KAFUL MAYAY and AON AON on it emenataing from a shop. I just had to have that music and I have been hooked ever since. Both of those songs plus NZALE from this excellent album are on disc 2 of this collection. The collection lists this LP as 1974, but I believe it was the year before when the worm turned for me with this record. I know I was 19 years old...

Thanks David, I will buy it from there.

In the video -- even the dancing seems to have been co-ordinated by Mzee Tabu himself -- Clean and civilized!

By the way, your song CHRISTINE is also on the Stern's collection. It was recorded in 1969 with African Fiesta National. Remember that African Fiesta was a group that spun off from the Grand Kalle's African Jazz. It featured Rochereau as lead singer and the incredible Docteur Nico on guitar. These guys had a falling out soon after. Kasanda started his own group called African Fiesta Sukisa and Rochereau continued with his African Fiesta National.

I have never bought anything from sterns, they are quite expensive, the small Congolese shops are slightly cheaper and they can get what you want when you have all the details.

I will check him out! Grin
