If someone who had never listened to congolese music asked you to give them a 'sample-listen' to one song...just one...which ONE will it be, among all the 'libraries' that most of you own @home, which is the ONE song you can use for your friends to hear as a first timer??

I know this is not easy seeing how many albums are out there, its a whole industry actually! But sometimes, my freinds put me in that position, they ask me to just pick out, the song I think is the best out of all my 'makwerekwere'  collection as they call them here!! lol.

I love congolise music alot, but they dont get it!!! So this is a question I get asked often!

Oh, and I know what y'all thinking.....that I Choose DROIT CHEMIN BY FALLY IPUPA, oh but I dont! Fallycious B, is a Koffiphile first and foremost!  Wink Grin

So tell me, which song WOULD YOU PICK UP AND PLAY? Remeber you'll only have a couple of minutes before they tell you to "rather switch off, and lets chat if you dont have something else to play!"  Grin

Will it be a Sebene song, Rumba, soukous etc??  Roll Eyes

Congolese music can be distinguished from the rest because of the sebenes so off course i would make them sample a song with a sebene and the song that comes to my mind is 'Solola Bien' by Wenge Maison Mére,the rhumba song i would make them sample is 'Feux de L'amour' by JB Mpiana or 'Biberon' by Ferre Gola.

Meanwhile stop lying that Droit Chemin woudn't be the one you would recommend,it's always the one you always talk about, tell us which Koffi song would you recommend then? Wink

This is a good combination but Tindika Lokito was just too short a song or maybe it would make a first time listener start panting for more actually,i like the way Flam Kapaya played the guitar in sync with Bill Mukeba's chants, superb!

Yeah, everyone was impressive including Celeo with his chants such as keba, kota, simba etc!! Grin
I also loved the rhythm from Japonaise,he was just excellent no wonder he was reassigned to take care of the rhythm dept,he was better there than as a soloist coz Flam was too creative than him in Wenge MM.

i prefer to show them the clips if at all possible, i think its more impressive that way!

Koffie has many very nice old albums that I prefer to show people, Loi, Effrakata, etc..but the dancing of Force de frappe (generique) I think the girls dance a little 'gentler'/slower than 'normal'  Grin That way 'conservative' people dont get  too shocked!!

Biberon is also a beautiuful song, Elegie, etc (but these are new ones  Grin) anyway, people,  thanks 4ur advices  Wink

PS: ofcourse they get to see/hear La merveille's music too, whether they like it or not!! kie kie kie Wink Grin

I didn't know you meant videos since you said '' give them a 'sample-listen' to one song...just one...'' however,it depends on the age range really,i wouldn't show a friend of mine a Fally video coz they would think am a juvenile myself neither would i show them old videos like Loi etc which had poor videos since they were done many years ago,i would show them new vids such as Danger De Mort, the new vids are well arranged too so they would portray a good image of the music and artists.

Very good topic indeed but be very careful as the audience that comes to your home - are they congo music lovers,, are they youths, are they middle aged,, have they come drank etc etc. Let me put it this way

1. if they are new to congo music please dont pick up a sebene but pick up a rhumba like: wakeup (Koffi et Wemba), Si Si Si (Koffi), Omba (JB Mpiana), Chantal Switzerland (Werrason), Okota (Blaise Bula) etc etc

2. If they somewhat like congo music and they are young and probarbly high on licker or drugs,, play them Modongo (Awilo), Carolina (Awilo), Lemine Lapiste Coupe Dacale Genre by Guy Guy, Sousol (Werrason), Alert Generale (Werrason), Droit Chemin (Fally) etc.

3. If they are in there mid and like Congo Music and love that mature dance ndombolo, play Mulolo (Wenge Musica Original), Je Tez Leponge (Zaiko), 77X77 (Zaiko), Voiture (WBCBG), Titanic (WBCBG et JB), TH (Wenge BCBG), Nzinzi (KKE), Likama (Massela), Solola Bein (Igwe) etc

4. If they are above 45 or 50 and they like this kind of music pliz and i say pliz just play them Congo on the river were u have old songs from Tabu Ley, Kekele etc,, TPOK Jazz,, Madilu,, Joskey etc. Pliz no hard sebenes here.

My main point is know the kind of poeple u are recieving b4 u slot that music in. If its a vedeo i would prefer u put WBCBG Zennith concert in but if its the young, WMM Zennith. Here i am differentiating coz the young ones love werrasons sebenes that are too noisy for me who is above 60 Grin

1 or 2 vids but the rest are fine.Brigade only features in the generique from minute 03.30 to 04.50.The animation starts with Mukusa Ya Mbua, then Apocalypse takes over,Mboshi does a little then it's Apoca and finally Mboshi closes the generique with the chants ''sofele, nazo kita,Papa Fololo oh''...
The rest of the songs with sebenes feature only Apoca and Mboshi on animation.

Sham weed is bad. U know what if u take it too much,, i can not b surprised if werrason came on stage na......ed coz i know a friend who bypassed his family by the living room naked coz he had smoked 2 much weed.

Ahhhh JB and Witchcraft,, all of them do it i think coz in africa to b rich u need spiritual backing iether Holy or darkness. Watch 6000 volts WMM Concert Du Kikwit and See the charms Werrason was given by the village headmen of Kikwit. But i have never seen JB do it Grin Grin

These were rumours started by Werrasoniques and encouraged by their boss and JB keeps answering all of you Werrasoniques when he says cha munthu cha munthu, cha nzambe cha nzambe.

It is a well known rumour that JB used to be scarce when he went to compose songs during the Wenge Musica BCBG time coz all his compositons brought Wenge where it was before the split up and he also helped the small time singers like Werrason be known. We also heard rumours that sometimes JB goes crazy and has to be locked up so that he doesn't go in public because of the same charms but off course that's all hearsay and i personally dismiss that as absolute crap from one disgruntled competitor, why do you think JB and Werra cannot trully reconcile even when you see them in public giving each other plastic smiles. Wink

Meaning that his lovely voice was just given to him by God.
It is a well known rumour that JB used to be scarce when he went to compose songs....
I heard this when we all waited for TH for almost 2-3yrs
why do you think JB and Werra cannot trully reconcile even when you see them in public giving each other plastic smiles. Wink
Because one is a sebene man while the other sings so they can not reconcile. each one thinks they are better than the other due to these attributes Grin.
